The kitchen

One hearth, no gas, no induction

Twelve dishes a night because that is what one fire can do properly. The menu changes when the delivery does, which means it changes most days and is never printed in advance.

The cooking

Wood, and the time it takes

Oak and a little beech, lit at two in the afternoon for a seven o'clock service. Nothing is finished to order, so the kitchen cannot rush and neither, happily, can we.

The room

Twenty-six seats, one long table

You will be sitting next to someone you do not know. Most people decide they like this by the second course, and the ones who do not are usually glad they tried it.

Drinks

A short list, mostly from nearby

Fourteen bottles, six by the glass, and a non-alcoholic list that someone actually thought about. If you tell us what you are eating we will pick for you and be right most of the time.

What we can and cannot do

Vegetarian every night with notice. Coeliac is difficult and we would rather say so than improvise. The room is up three steps and we will help with them.

Bookings open on the first

One month ahead, at nine in the morning, and they go in about an hour. Two seats at the end of the table are kept back for whoever walks in.
