Northlight

Landscape work, mostly at dawn

Iceland, the Faroes, and a lot of waiting in cars. The light I want lasts about forty minutes and does not care whether I am ready.

Series 01

Sixty-one days of the same shoreline

Same tripod holes, same hour, every day through a winter. The interesting part is how little repeats, and how much of that only shows up when the frames sit next to each other.

Series 02

The road north, in one pass

Nine hundred kilometres shot in four days without turning back for anything. What is in the edit is what the road gave up in order, which is not how I usually work.

Method

One camera, two lenses, no filters

Everything is a single exposure. If the sky is brighter than the ground, the sky is brighter than the ground. I would rather lose the frame than assemble one that was never there.

Prints

Editions of nine

Hand-printed, signed on the back, shipped flat. Cotton rag, pigment ink, and a size that fits through a standard doorway without a conversation about installers.

Commissions

I travel, but not in a hurry

Editorial and architectural work, usually a week on location because the weather decides the schedule. If the deadline is Tuesday and the forecast is wrong, I will tell you before you book.

Commissions open for spring

Tell me where and roughly when. I will say honestly whether the light will be doing anything worth photographing.
